The fix is very simple. I read it in one of the support pages and the idea isn't my own.
Disclaimer: This is just a guide. The user should be responsible for the settings he/she chooses. I highly recommend taking a backup before proceeding. In the event of loss of emails, contacts and other critical data the backup can be used.
FIX : Connect your iPhone to iTunes and click on the "Info" tab.
Proceed by using the image as a guide to check the various configurations as shown below. You might have to careful when you make selections while configuring the accounts. iTunes would probably throw some error/warning messages. Read it carefully. Choosing the wrong options might lead to loss of data.

The new OS is nice, I feel it is faster than the previous versions. I don't have many MP3s or video files in it. That's another reason why it is super fast.
Btw, I had to reset the ATT voicemail password as well.

But this suggests that the only way to sync is tethered? How does a switch in Itunes affect over the air synching? Does the Iphone get set somehow based on those switches?
No. It is not tethered!
I'm not sure what the problem is. But, from what I noticed, even if you had set it to sync previously, the upgrade apparently turns it off. (But the settings in the iPhone would show it is ON)
Once you turn it back on using the "info tab" in iTunes it begins to work.
Another friend told me that it worked for him without making any changes. He guessed that the google servers could have been busy.
